Recruitment: Frequently Asked Questions

  • Can I be in a sorority and also be involved in other campus organizations, like a major-based fraternity?

Of course! Many sorority women are actively involved in student government, clubs, honor societies, and various other organizations. At USF, there are numerous professional fraternities for pre-law, dental, medical, and other fields, and we encourage you to explore them. The key difference between Panhellenic sororities and major-based fraternities is that, per the Manual of Information (MOI), you may only join one Panhellenic sorority. However, you’re welcome to join as many other organizations as you’d like. Being in a sorority enriches your college experience—it doesn’t limit it!

  • Do I need any letters of reccomendation?

Unlike many other universities and Panhellenic associations, USF Panhellenic does not require or request letters of recommendation for recruitment. Providing one will not give you any advantage in the recruitment process, as all potential new members are given an equal opportunity to find their home regardless of prior connections. Our recruitment process is designed to be inclusive and values who you are as an individual rather than any external endorsements. So, there’s no need to stress about securing letters—just come as you are, and let your personality and values shine!

  • Can I sign up for recruitment if I’m an international student?

Yes! Sororities welcome international students and are a great way to make friends and find a home away from home. Joining a sorority provides a built-in support system, helping you navigate college life in a new country while forming lifelong friendships. Many chapters celebrate cultural diversity and offer opportunities to share your background and traditions with others. Additionally, sororities provide academic support, leadership development, and networking opportunities that can help you thrive both during and after college.

  • Can I go through recruitment as a transfer student?

Absolutely! Transfer students are welcome to go through Panhellenic recruitment and join a sorority. It’s a great way to meet new people, get involved on campus, and find a supportive community at USF. Many sorority women are transfer students themselves and have found that joining a chapter helped them adjust to their new environment while building lasting friendships. No matter where you’re coming from, sorority life can help make USF feel like home!

  • Can I join a USF PHA sorority if I am transferring from another school and have been initiated into a chapter not on USF's campus?

If you’ve been initiated into a sorority at another school, you cannot join a different Panhellenic sorority at USF. The National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) guidelines only allow one membership in an NPC sorority. However, if you are transferring and haven't been initiated into a chapter, you can absolutely go through recruitment and join a sorority here at USF.
